Uses of carvings decorated with acanthus leaf motif

Vintage furniture restoration is now possible even at home! It can be used both as a central feature and as a corner ornament, thus distinguishing the furniture you create from mass-produced goods. Whether it's a dresser, built-in unit, or nightstand, this ornamentation can be widely used as a decorative fireplace accent, wall ornament, or door embellishment. Vintage furniture restoration offers many advantages: it is a sustainable solution for giving existing furniture a new look and also saves money. With these decorative wood mouldings, you can even create antique furniture replicas.

Attaching the ornamentation

To attach the carved pieces, we recommend using wood glue. Attaching is not limited to wood surfaces, so you can also fix them to plywood or plasterboard without any worries. As a first step, sand the back of the decorative wood moulding as well as the receiving surface. Next, make sure both surfaces are free of dust and grease. Apply a thin and even layer of wood glue to both prepared surfaces, then carefully join the two pieces together. While drying, press them together using a clamp or weight. If the glue seeps out from the sides, wipe it off with a damp cloth so that no trace remains after drying. It is advisable to wait the recommended 24 hours for drying.

What surface treatments can be applied to decorative wood mouldings?

Thanks to the exotic wood’s excellent properties, this ornamentation readily accepts any type of surface treatment. Whether it's lacquer, stain, oiling or painting, all products available in our webshop are pre-sanded and thus prepped for finishing. Our carvings are sold without surface treatment. This way, you can decide which type of surface treatment you prefer.

Useful tips for surface treatment

Before surface treating, make sure the ornament is free from dust and grease. If you want a completely uniform shade when staining, it is also recommended to use a filler primer. If you want to preserve the wood grain pattern, choose oiling, lacquering, or staining. When painting, the wooden carving patterns can either be highlighted or blended into a piece of uniform color furniture. Our wide selection of furniture ornaments features a myriad of wooden carving patterns; watch our presentation video here!

The history of the acanthus leaf motif

The acanthus leaf motif was the most popular decorative motif in Baroque and Rococo styles. On furniture embellishment carvings and wooden carving patterns, acanthus leaves appeared in abundance, in trailing vines, spiral forms, and in combination with flowers. It is no coincidence that the motif became a dual symbol of power and aesthetic refinement.

Ornamentation - the appearance of decorative wood mouldings

Ornamentation is the art of decorative elements, serving exclusively aesthetic purposes. In the world of furniture decoration and interior design, its main role is to enhance visual appeal, as even a simple, functional piece gains artistic value through ornamental elements. It helps to make furniture unique, distinguishing them from mass-produced items and increasing their market value.
