More info

This rosette carving is actually four French lilies, joined at the stem in the shape of a cross. This decorative element can be found not only on furniture but also on many old medals.
The French lily is also called the Anjou lily, although it is not clear what it represents. In French, it is called fleur de lys, the flower of the lily. Some people believe that this lily pattern does not represent a flower and that the shape of the plant is indeed different from the lily. It is not only a symbol of the Scouts. The Anjou lily first appeared in heraldry in the 12th century as a symbol of the French monarchy. Some say that it forms three spears, but if we compare the Anjou lily to the ostrich feathers of the knight's helmet, the resemblance is striking, it looks like a primitive symbol of the ostrich feathered knight's helmet, stylised by the coat of arms painters. The Anjou lily, also known as the French lily, is a later name. There is an explanation that the shape imitates the autumn petal, the iris flower. It is indeed impressive how the layers of meaning have built up over the centuries.
