The RK-210B wooden carvings are primarily recommended for decorating dressers, vitrines, and cabinets during furniture making. It is also excellent for antique furniture restoration! These carvings can also form part of a unique interior, for example, as wood corner molding during door renovation or as wall decorations. For small DIY projects, decorating chests or tea boxes can also be a creative solution.
During restoration, surface preparation is crucial. First, it is advisable to disassemble the furniture so that every workpiece is easily accessible later. If you opt for complete renovation, it is worth sanding the entire surface down to the wood starting with coarse, then finer abrasives. If there are areas that can only be smoothed by hand, use high-quality sanding cloth or sponge for this.
The ornaments arrive sanded, so there's no need to sand them, but it is recommended to gently sand the receiving surface. Next, apply a thin layer of glue to both surfaces, then fit the ornament into place. For the drying period—which typically takes 24 hours—clamp or press the two surfaces together. For pressing, it is recommended to use a cabinetmaker's clamp or a weight. If you are not gluing the carving onto wood, it is advisable to use contact adhesive. If gluing is not possible, rosettes can also be secured with small-headed pins.
Although many are wary of it, this phase of the process is not difficult—just attention and manual skill are needed. It is important to ensure the surface is always clean and dust-free before starting the work. The wooden carvings can be painted, stained, glazed, oiled, or lacquered, for example. Before staining, apply a filling primer (Milesi) to the surface of the ornament to fill the fibers cut during carving. This will ensure even coloration. For eager amateurs, the combination of glaze and satin-finish lacquer is recommended. When using these finishes, just make sure to apply them in thin and even layers. For the desired effect, it is advisable to work in two to three thin layers.
The acanthus leaves pattern is one of the most significant decorative motifs from antiquity; in Greek culture, it symbolized eternal life, rebirth, and the indomitable power of nature. The Romans used it in rich and detailed forms in furniture decoration. As a decorative element, its iconic status comes not from botanical accuracy, but from the aesthetic appearance of its stylized leaves. In Renaissance and Baroque art, the acanthus leaves pattern was frequently featured on furniture, frames, and decorative moldings. It also appears in stylized form in later artistic styles as a symbol of timeless age and elegance.
