Perforated rattan rolls are machine-woven from the outer bark of the rattan palm. This material is primarily used for crafting the seats and backrests of furniture pieces, such as thonet chairs, but it is also utilised in sophisticated interior design solutions. The weaving pattern is octagonal. Rattan sheets provide an airy and elegant look while offering excellent strength and durability. With proper use and maintenance, premium cane webbing can last for decades.
Material: rattan (cane palm) bark. Pattern: octagonal, density: 2 holes per inch. Width: 60 cm, with weaving strands extending at least 2 cm beyond the nominal width on each side. Roll length: 15.24 m (50 feet). Quality: S (superior) premium, strength: ideal for chair caning. The product is available by the metre, not only in rolls.
To make the S superior quality thonet chair caning material easier to work with, it should be soaked in water for 15-30 minutes. This way, the fabric softens and does not break. Do NOT soak in regular tap water! Use DISTILLED or IONISED water. If you use regular tap water, the thonet chair caning material may become greyish. If you soak it in distilled or ionised water, the material will not discolour during soaking.
Rattan is a natural material obtained from the outer bark of rattan palms native to the tropical regions of Southeast Asia. The palm grows quickly, making it an eco-friendly and renewable source of rattan materials. Premium rattan sheets are strong and flexible, making them ideal for furniture. Restoring a thonet rocking chair means replacing damaged or worn-out chair caning, as individual strands cannot be replaced. This is a multi-step process, in which the old material is removed, the new rattan sheets are prepared (soaked), and then carefully fixed into the frame of the chair. The aim is to restore the chair's original condition and durability. Soaking makes the rattan sheets soft, flexible, and manageable, which eases stretching and fitting into the frame. It is important to always soak S-labelled materials in distilled or ionised water! A special, wedge-shaped cane—available from our webshop—is used to fix the rattan sheet into the groove. With our premium quality materials, restoring your thonet rocking chair is simple! If you purchase materials from us and require it, we will provide access to a detailed chair repair support video. It is an extremely versatile material, used both for restoring chairs and rocking chairs as well as making other products. It is a great choice for chair seats, door inserts, decorating small furniture, radiator cover panels, lampshades, and for rattan room divider screens. Its natural texture brings warmth and uniqueness to our interior spaces. Its perforated structure also makes it ideal for manufacturing radiator cover panels. It transmits heat well, so the efficiency of the radiator is reduced only minimally. This classic weave pattern also characterises thonet chairs. Rattan sheets can also be used as inserts for door fronts. We especially recommend this fabric for restoring bentwood chairs UK and thonet rocking chairs and cesca chairs!
Thonet furniture was born in the mid-19th century thanks to Michael Thonet's revolutionary bentwood technique. These lightweight and elegant pieces quickly became popular throughout Europe and the world. Their classic design and quality craftsmanship have made them timeless. When refurbishing thonet furniture made with perforated seating, special attention must be paid to the condition of the weave and the preservation of the original wood. Professional restoration significantly extends their lifespan and restores their original beauty. It is advisable to entrust the work to a specialist to preserve the authentic character of the furniture.
Perforated rattan sheets are both decorative and highly functional, suitable for use as radiator cover panels or as infill material in rattan room divider UK. They allow airflow between both sides of the door. This solution can be used not only on doors but also on drawers and cabinet doors. It provides a premium quality, elegant, and aesthetic surface that highlights the craftsman's work.
Rattan sheets made from the cane bark absorb stain and paint poorly on their glossy front side. We achieved results by mixing dye with shellac or spirit varnish. Before treating the surface, always test-paint a small section first. Make sure that the stain stays on the surface and cannot be simply wiped away. Always use solvent-based varnishes instead of water-based ones, as water-based varnishes can cause the material to stretch. After drying, the cane regain its original tautness.
