To make the S superior quality thonet chair caning material easier to work with, it should be soaked in water for 15-30 minutes. This way, the fabric softens and does not break. Do NOT soak in regular tap water! Use DISTILLED or IONISED water. If you use regular tap water, the thonet chair caning material may become greyish. If you soak it in distilled or ionised water, the material will not discolour during soaking.

Colouring rattan sheet materials

Before treating the surface, always test-paint a small section first. Make sure that the stain stays on the surface and cannot be simply wiped away. Always use solvent-based varnishes instead of water-based ones, as water-based varnishes can cause the material to stretch. After drying, the cane regain its original tautness.
