For making these rattan sheets, the fibers are obtained from the outer bark of the rattan palm, native to the tropical regions of Southeast Asia. The weave is octagonal, also known as Vienna weave. Rattan sheets are an extremely versatile material, used for both refurbishing furniture and crafting new elements. Perforated rattan material is an excellent choice for door inserts, especially where natural ventilation is beneficial, such as in wardrobe doors, shoe cabinets, or meter cabinets. This natural rattan panel material allows free airflow, while discreetly concealing what you don’t wish to keep in plain sight. Whether in kitchens or bathrooms, these rattan panels stand out for their warm, natural texture. It can be perfectly used for hallway walls, small furniture, and for making thin radiator covers or even rattan radiator covers.
Basically, it can be fixed onto a wooden frame either by stapling to the back or wedging into a groove at the front with cane. In either case, soak the rattan material in cold water for 15-30 minutes, which will make it slightly stretch and significantly soften. This way, it becomes much easier to work with. Each strand of the rattan sheet needs to be fastened. Do not overstretch the material, as it will tighten naturally as it dries. Set the stapler force so that it holds the strand but does not cut through when fastening. If necessary, staple through a backing tape to ensure the staple does not cut the strand. As a final step, trim the excess and place a finishing slat over the staples.
The term "rattan by the roll" means the material can be purchased cut to any length as needed. This way of buying is ideal if you need rattan fabric for a small surface and do not want to purchase a whole roll. The price of rattan materials depend on its load capacity and the width of the roll.
Measure the width and length required for your project or decor, and add a little extra for overlap. We recommend leaving a 5-10 cm overlap on both sides so that the fabric can be stretched and secured safely. Important: always prepare rattan sheets before use! Before installation, soak the material in cold water for 15–30 minutes. This softens the material, makes it more flexible, and makes it much easier to stretch and fit accurately into the frame.
Rattan fabric have difficulty absorbing paint and stain on their glossy surface side. It is recommended to use solvent-based lacquers instead of water-based ones, as water-based lacquers can make the rattan material stretch. After drying, the rattan webbing uk regain their original tautness. For the best results, use a coloring agent mixed into shellac or beisen lacquer. Attention: always test the surface treatment on a small piece first! After the paint or stain has dried, ensure the colorant cannot be wiped off.
