Preparing and mounting wooden carvings
If you decide on a complete restoration, it is advisable to sand the entire surface of the object down to the wood, starting with a coarser grit and gradually moving to finer abrasives. You only need wood glue (D2, D3), along with weights or quick clamps, for gluing. Apply a thin, even layer of glue on both surfaces (the back of the ornament and the receiving side), then position the carving in the desired spot. Clamp during drying time, then carefully wipe away any small glue drops caused by pressing with a slightly damp cloth. Although the glue dries clear, once hardened, it is difficult to remove, and paint or stains might not adhere properly, so the coverage may not be complete. The complete drying time is generally 24 hours.
What should you do if you can't fix the ornament with glue?
If gluing is not adequate for some reason, mechanical mounting of the carving is also possible. For this task, small brad or wire nails are recommended, which are less visible and do not damage the wood. It is important to insert the nails into predrilled holes to prevent the wood from splitting. With a countersink, the heads can be set below the wood surface so that filling and smoothing is easier later. This method provides a secure and lasting solution for mounting the ornament.
How should you finish wooden carvings?
Finishing is the final step. Although many fear it, this phase of the work is not complicated either. Painting, staining, oiling, or lacquering can all bring beautiful results. Painting covers the wood grain, while other methods highlight it. For enthusiastic amateurs, the combination of staining and satin-finish lacquer is especially recommended. When using these, you only need to make sure to apply a nice, thin, and even layer. To achieve the desired effect, it is advisable to work in two or three thin coats.
