Surface preparation is crucial during furniture restoration. First, it is advisable to disassemble the furniture so that each part becomes easier to access later. If you decide on a complete restoration, sand the entire surface down to the wood, starting with coarse and progressing to finer grain sandpaper. If there are areas that can only be smoothed by hand, use high-quality sanding cloth or sponges.
The ornaments arrive pre-sanded, so you only need to lightly sand the receiving surface. Next, apply a thin layer of glue to both surfaces and fit the ornament into place. For the drying time—usually 24 hours—clamp or press the two surfaces together. It is best to use a woodworking clamp or weight for pressing. If you are not gluing the carving onto wood, it is advisable to use contact adhesive. If gluing is not an option, you can also secure the rossette with small-headed nails.
Although many are apprehensive, this stage isn’t difficult—just attention and dexterity are needed. It is important to always ensure the surface is clean and dust-free before starting work. The wooden carvings can be painted, stained, glazed, oiled, or varnished. Before staining, apply a filling primer (such as Milesi) to fill the fibers cut during the carving process. This will ensure even coloration. For enthusiastic amateurs, a combination of glaze and satin lacquer is most recommended. When using these, just make sure to apply each finishing product in a nice, thin, even layer. For the desired effect, it is best to work in two to three thin coats.
