Palmetta and CNC technology

Wooden carvings require great skill and craftsmanship, but unfortunately, it is a trade that is disappearing. In order to continue creating ornamentation for classical-style furniture, we apply the advancements of modern CNC technology. So you no longer need to look for an expensive woodcarving master, yet you still have access to authentic decorative elements. With this technology, we provide excellent quality, yet affordable wooden carvings.

The use of carvings in restoration antique furniture

The coat of arms and scalloped patterns often appear as decorative elements on baroque and rococo style furniture, highlighting the elegant lines of the piece. This wooden carvings is most commonly used on the front panels of mirrored cabinets, dressers, headboards, and console tables. The scalloped motif represents the beauty of nature, while the coat of arms symbolizes noble traditions and status. Details of the carving are often enhanced with gilding or patina to achieve an even more striking effect.

How to treat the surface of wooden carvings?

The carvings in our collection are delivered with a natural, untreated surface, so they can be painted, stained, or varnished as you wish. Surface treatment should always be done on a clean, dust-free base, in several thin layers. In restoration antique furniture, the combination of stain and satin varnish results in a natural and aesthetic effect. This solution highlights the details of the carvings and provides long-term protection.

Fixing the palmetta with nails, e.g., during restoration antique furniture

If glue is insufficient for fastening the palmetta, mechanical fixing can also be used as an alternative. For this, it is advisable to choose small boat nails or wire nails, as these are less noticeable and gentle on the exotic wood structure. It is recommended to pre-drill before inserting the nails to avoid splitting the wood. Drive the nail heads below the surface using a nail set, then easily hide them with wood filler.

The history of the scalloped pattern in ornamentation

The scalloped motif was an essential part of baroque and rococo styles, where the forms were fundamentally composed of sea-inspired, wavy, asymmetrical elements. The pattern held not only aesthetic, but also symbolic meaning: it represented the richness of the sea, resurrection, and pilgrimage (the scallop of Saint James). In rococo furniture, such as dressers and cabinets, the scalloped element often became a central feature on the front, the apron between the legs, or the center of the upper crown. It was often used as a smaller decorative element at the top of alcoves (so-called 'scalloped niche') or as ornamentation around elaborate frames and furniture locks. The pattern was usually carved in deep relief, giving the furniture's surface texture and shadow, enhancing its visual richness.
